Hey girls… I hope you are well.
This month’s topic is quite sensitive, but it is incredibly important that we have this conversation because this affects many girls around the world. It could even be affecting you or someone that you know.
Recently, I read an article about the effect that social media has had on young women around the world. Whilst social media is often a vessel for spreading positivity, it can equally have negative impacts. For instance, Opinium, an organisation which aims to inform society about social issues through research, found that 50% of all girls within the U.K. have been subject to abuse on social media.
Due to the increased engagement and obsession with influencers and celebrities, society’s standards concerning how people should look has become incredibly high. Nowadays, girls are often compared to influencers and are made to believe that if they do not look like them then it means they are not beautiful. This has led to many girls feeling insecure and overly self-conscious. However, what they do not realise is that the celebrities that they are comparing themselves to, are not as perfect as they seem.
Whilst we can’t deny that many celebrities look gorgeous, it is important to be aware of the fact that they probably had some help. Some of your favourite celebrities and influencers have had the luxury to achieve their gorgeous look with specialist help. For instance, some have had surgery or use top-quality and expensive products to enhance their beauty.
This is why it is important for you to understand that nobody is perfect, and everyone has flaws. You don’t need to look a certain way to be beautiful because, guess what? You are already stunning just the way you are. Just take a look in the mirror sis!
Nobody else looks exactly like you, you are special, and you should show it off to the world. Also, let me tell you a secret. Usually, the online trolls and abusers are one of two things:
- They are either jealous of your amazingness
- And/or , they are actually insecure themselves. Sadly, some people are hurting too and believe that being horrible to another person is a way to heal their pain.
This is why you should not take what they are saying seriously.
Don’t allow people or society and its unattainable standards to prevent you from being the fantastic, intelligent, funny and beautiful person that you are. If you allow them to get to you, the world will never know that you are a treasure.
So, instead of wasting your time comparing yourself to others or paying attention to negative people, you should keep your head high and remind yourself that you are an extraordinary young woman with an amazing future ahead of you!
If you know anyone who may need to hear this message, please don’t hesitate to share it with them 🙂
